Valve has released the Team Fortress 2 SDK, which means we can expect a load of new content from the modding community.

Valve is throwing the Team Fortress 2 community a bone, as the game’s SDK (Software Development Kit) has now been released to the public. This includes the game client and server game code for the PC version.

Alongside this, Valve announced that they are doing “a big update” to all the company’s multiplayer back catalog as well.

But players are still urging others not to buy crates.

Alongside the release, Valve announced they are rolling out a huge update to Source engine games like Counter-Strike: Source, ec., which adds 64-bit binary support, a scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and more.

The SDK released by Valve gives mod makers the power to change, extend or rewrite Team Fortress 2. This means modders can do anything from small teaks, to “complete conversions.”

Modders do need to remember that the SDK being distributed to users is for non-commercial use, which means anything created using the SDK must be free. Creators can publish the Team Fortress 2 mods on the Steam Store, which will even appear as new games in the Steam game list.

Valve also requested that mod makers do not try and profit from the SDK, stating, “Players have a lot of investment in their TF2 inventories, and Steam Workshop contributors have created of a lot of that content. The majority of items in the game now are thanks to the hard work of the TF2 community. To respect that, we’re asking TF2 mod makers continue to respect that connection, and to not make mods that have the purpose of trying to profit off Workshop contributors’ efforts.”

Team Fortress 2 was released on PC in 2007. It is the sequel to the 1996 Team Fortress mod for Quake. Valve made the multiplayer shooter free to play in 2011, and it has had a dedicated community even after all these years.

Will we ever see Team Fortress 3? Given Valve’s recent behavior, I’d say the wait will be pretty long.
