Well, this is unexpected. Just when you thought Naughty Dog was done with The Last of Us, since for the most part of the year they’ve been very busy with the HBO show, they still somehow managed to drop a surprise update that might persuade you to come back and reload the game, but this time, from a slightly different point of view.

One game that brings controversy whenever it’s mentioned is now Steam Deck verified ahead of its release.
The new free update will be available today on both PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, to bring us the new Chronological Mode to the game.
What Exactly Is Chronological Mode?
If you’ve played the game before, you might remember that The Last of Us Part 2 was emotional, deliberate, and has enough gut-wrenching moments that sometimes make you question your morals.
You’ll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more.
Originally, the way the game is structured is that you play as Ellie for most of the game, build up a hatred for Abby, only to go back into the past to play as the person you’d been hunting all along. It’s this style of storytelling that set it apart from all the other games back in 2020, which helped it earn a lot of awards, and eventually its own HBO series.
Now, the new Chronological Mode will allow us to gain a whole new experience by stripping all of that away and presenting everything in the order it actually happened. This means that you’ll bounce between Ellie and Abby’s perspectives as events in the game unfold around them.
Should You Jump Back In?
Personally, I think that if you’ve been missing the game since Season 2 of the HBO series just ended a few months ago, it’s a great time to come back in. Also, Part 2 Remastered recently launched on PC, and The Last of Us Complete Collector’s Edition will be available tomorrow for PS5.
That said, if you haven’t played The Last of Us Part 2 yet, I’d advise you to play this game in its original setting. There’s a reason they made the story the way that it is and the emotional punch of certain “reveals” is better experienced in the original narrative.
If you’re a returning player though, I think the devs just gave us another reason to reload the game. There might not be new content, but I’m actually intrigued to see the game in a different light. Apart from the narrative experience, there’s also new trophies and new skins that you can unlock once you finish the game in Chronological Mode:

As Naughty Dog stated, “It was no small feat to bring The Last of Us Part 2 chronologically,” and this makes sense given that the game’s story is so well-put together.
Is it necessary? Probably not. But let’s give credit to where it’s due, because the developers still managed to put in some work just to bring us back their masterpiece and re-experience the game altogether, even if it’s only from a slightly different lens.
