A legal battle from Blizzard Entertainment seems to be brewing, and it’s targeting something insanely close to fans of the developer – Classic World Of Warcraft. Despite being almost two decades old, classic WoW is still regarded as one of the greatest eras in MMO history.

Honestly, it’s not surprising how often fans beg for classic WoW to come back in full force, as those days were much simpler; for instance, there was no need for the mass microtransaction slop Blizzard later became known for.

Although Blizzard has created their own options to play the original World Of Warcraft through methods like WoW Classic, fans have taken it into their own hands to create something reminiscent of that original experience. One of them is Turtle WoW, a notable alternative private server that adds custom content on top of that vanilla experience.

However, Blizzard has recently filed a complaint against Turtle WoW in the California court system, explicitly pointing out that Turtle WoW not only steals Blizzard’s original content but has been actively seeking to profit from it.

Additionally, the current success of Turtle WoW and this prominent acknowledgment by Blizzard may point us in the direction of receiving more alternative WoW Vanilla content that fans seem to be begging for.

First of all, we should begin by discussing the role of custom servers, especially as they’ve been growing in popularity within the last few years. The truth is, even though Turtle WoW is one of the biggest yet, hitting 13,000 concurrent players in a realm that opened a week ago, this isn’t the mere beginning of custom server popularity.

There are tons of private servers for both vanilla and all other types of popular expansions and updates. But where Turtle WoW differs is taking vanilla WoW before the Burning Crusade expansion, and going down a separate path, with new custom questlines, content, and even playable classes.

As spotted in the legal reports by Blizzard (thanks, Gamespot), Blizzard claims Turtle WoW has been “escalating its efforts to cannibalize and disrupt Blizzard’s WoW player community by, for example, increasing its social media presence, partnering with videogame influencers, and actively promoting a new version of its infringing game, Turtle WoW 2.0.”

Looking through the documents, you can also find a complaint where Blizzard expresses that Turtle WoW has been conducting “ financial operations” that “process both ‘donations’ from user accounts as well as the internal allocation of financial resources.”

Blizzard is claiming Turtle Wow is for the owners “own financial benefit,” which ties in with the fact that Turtle Wow is actively accepting money in exchange for its services, many of which are rooted in a modified version of Blizzard’s original content.

The Future Of Vanilla World Of Warcraft

The truth is, it’s a bit uncertain what’s going to come from this current legal dispute. Looking through the thoroughly put-together documents, Blizzard is keen to pick apart every inch of Turtle WoW and how it technically infringes on Blizzard’s own property.

However, Turtle WoW has definitely put in the effort to be something different than most other custom WoW services. But because Turtle WoW is now much more mainstream and catching the public’s eye, it has definitely put it on Blizzard’s chopping block.

The main statement being shared by the Turtle team on Discord is that “Turtle WoW is here to stay. Challenges come to us often, and each time we are prepared to face them. We remain fully committed to delivering the Turtle WoW experience that you’ve come to love over the years.”

But one thing we should hit home is that, despite this legal dispute, it’s at least proof that the franchise’s fans and Blizzard alike are not going to let classic vanilla WoW go away anytime soon. In fact, Turtle WoW may help Blizzard finally achieve one goal fans have been begging for.

Whether it’s through Turtle WoW’s custom content or something Blizzard inevitably builds in the future, the one thing many classic World Of Warcraft fans crave is an alternative to the current Burning Crusade path we’ve been on for over the past decade. Fans want more Vanilla WoW, and this may be the sign that we’re going to get it.

Even if this means the Turtle WoW version of this alternate vanilla WoW experience gets canceled, at least it’ll maybe prod Blizzard to take a crack at it themselves. Especially with the recent resurgence of WoW Classic Hardcore, it probably isn’t too crazy an idea.
