Sonic Generations Put In New Sonic Bundle To Avoid Complete Delisting

With the imminent release of Sonic X Shadow Generations on October 24, 2024, many fans have questioned what will happen to the original Sonic Generations Collection on Steam.

Luckily, in an FAQ post regarding delisting, Sega stated they will still be delisting the original on September 9th but will still be “offering a way to play the game in its original form.”

Instead of erasing the game off Steam like many other companies, it will now be part of a “Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle” that includes the following games for a retail price of $59.99:

Whether this bundle is worth the hefty price tag may be up for debate by fans. Regardless, it’s great to see a company not just remove a game from Steam despite likely calls from a financial standpoint that doing so would hurt the sails of the newer version.

Also, as PCGamer explains, this new update is important because “Sonic Generations has had a decade of modding and fan work that would start to wither without a legal way to get the game.” As the Sega FAQ states, players will luckily “still be able to mod the game” through the release in the bundle.

Regarding game preservation, many ask why it’s important for a company to continue selling a game with a newer version out already.

A great illustration is the huge letdown of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy—The Definitive Edition, which was released with major bugs and was almost unplayable while simultaneously taking consumers’ original way of playing out of their hands.

While fans are confident in Sonic X Shadow Generations‘ quality, it’s nice to know that a previous version will still be available for a new release of an updated game that could almost become a potential ticking time bomb of lost content. Hopefully, Sega’s decision will become more commonplace in the gaming industry.
