As one of the best indies of all time, Hollow Knight boasts a roster of bosses that is as remarkable as challenging.

While it’s an excellent title for beginners, Team Cherry’s work is demanding to levels that, taken to the max, can be genuinely frustrating.

These unholy challenges are often optional or end-game, but they are still obstacles the game’s fans try to overcome despite how many attempts it may take.

10 Soul Tyrant

The Magic Spammer

The bosses’ dream versions are quite demanding, though depending on your playstyle, Soul Tyrant can be the most annoying of all.

With its vast arsenal of projectiles and moves, it’s an unpredictable boss that demands great mastery of positioning, as you always have to be one step ahead to avoid being destroyed by its combos.

Before it teleports or sends out its magic, you have to be prepared to evade in the right direction. Otherwise, you’ll lose the fight’s flow, and trust me, it’s so intense that you won’t be able to recover.

The base version is no walk in the park, but Soul Tyrant is easily the type of boss that can put you off playing Hollow Knight for a good handful of hours.

9 White Defender

A Vastly Increased Challenge

White Defender offers some of the best combat in Hollow Knight, but it’s entirely logical Team Cherry made him optional.

Given his immense health, speed, and ability to string together seemingly unstoppable combos of attacks, only the most skillful of players will beat him.

If you can’t register multiple attacks at once and dodge them all with Matrix-worthy reflexes, you probably can’t take on White Defender.

Considering he has attacks that take two masks from your bar, thank goodness he’s a dream boss and you can wear your breakable amulets without fear, as you’re going to lose more than once.

8 Sisters of Battle

A Precision Fight

As my favorite fight in Hollow Knight, the Sisters of Battle is the perfect demonstration of how a multi-boss can be both fair and satisfying.

The combat design is impeccable, slowly introducing you to their moves to warm you up and then exponentially increasing the challenge until the battle becomes a war.

All it takes is one missed jump, dash, or spell for the Sisters of Battle to punish you with the most graceful series of attacks you will ever witness in your entire life.

Although it may seem that way at first, it’s not the most difficult fight of all because it becomes predictable, but this is precisely what makes it one of the most enjoyable in the entire game.

7 Grey Prince Zote

Don’t Miss This One

Speaking of optional bosses you might miss if you’re not paying attention, Grey Prince Zote is a magical showdown that’s both hilarious and challenging.

The mythical NPC has an idyllic version in Bretta’s dreams, who imagines him as a legendary warrior who does indeed pose a challenge of considerable magnitude.

As such, Zote is so erratic and slippery that predicting his movements or knowing where to position yourself to avoid them is practically impossible, so y ou’re going to take hits no matter what.

Plus, with each new attempt you conquer, the boss gets even tougher, which is especially suitable for those who want to fully appreciate the legend as much as Bretta does.

6 Markoth

The Randomness Show

Unlike every boss on this list, Markoth is a foe that oscillates between being frustrating, unfair, and an unpleasant fest of randomness.

While the rest of the entries are difficult but fair, this Dream Warrior proves the gods are imperfect, as he’s one of the few blemishes in Hollow Knight’s otherwise clean record.

Despite being a simple-minded boss who does nothing but flip his shields and throw daggers at you, the fight’s latter stages are an incomprehensible spectacle where you rely more on luck than skill.

Fortunately, he doesn’t have many health points, so he’s uneven and unfairly unpredictable but fast to beat. Regardless, I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say he’s the worst boss in the entire game.

5 Lost Kin

Too Many Spirits

While some bosses are fast, have a lot of movement, or can attack from multiple directions, Lost Kin is the complete package.

The dream version of Broken Vessel is an absolute menace from all sides, offering extremely short windows of time to punish his attacks without risking getting hit.

His movements are irregular and cover different distances and trajectories with each new execution, summons minions to hinder the player’s mobility, and doesn’t stop moving unless he’s stunned, so he demands perfect performance.

If you arrive below the required level or without the proper charms, Lost Kin is undoubtedly one of the most unforgiving bosses in the adventure.

4 Great Nailsage Sly

Small but Dangerous

For a couple of years, the Pantheon of the Sage completely outclassed me. I dominated every matchup without fail except the last one, where Great Nailsage Sly was always waiting to slice me in half.

In terms of speed, combo length, and versatility, this small but fearsome creature can make even the most experienced of players sweat.

Using all the Nail Arts, he can travel the entire screen in milliseconds, forcing you to be clinically precise with every little decision you make during combat.

When he enters his second phase and becomes an unstoppable projectile, all you can do is pray and hope the stars align to defeat him.

3 Pure Vessel

The Prime of a Peerless Warrior

When you face the Hollow Knight for the first time, it’s inevitable to think about what it would have been like in its prime. Thankfully, the Godmaster DLC answered that question, giving us one of the most formidable fights in the game.

However, the only thing that matches Pure Vessel’s excellence as a boss is its ability to drain your life in seconds. Since all of its attacks do double damage, making a mistake is practically a sure restart.

His attacks cover extensive areas, throws magic from afar, parries, has long combos, and can endure many hits, making him an impenetrable fortress that will take a lot of practice to master.

Still, fighting Pure Vessel is so much fun that you almost don’t realize you’re 40 tries in and you still haven’t made it past the halfway point, which is a great testament to its quality and difficulty.

2 Nightmare King Grimm

A Spectacle for Posterity

Nightmare King Grimm is the only fight in Hollow Knight that made me feel I was facing a modded boss, as the challenge seemed impossible at first glance.

To be honest, I lost count of how many tries it took me not to defeat him. Unlike his base version, which didn’t demand as much of me, his dreamlike form made me rethink my gaming skills.

I eventually got him, but not before I had studied absolutely every last detail of his moveset. Not even in my undergraduate years did I sit down and evaluate every little detail with such diligence.

To this day, I have unparalleled respect for Nightmare King Grimm. I think he’s one of the finest bosses with the best OST in the game, but the challenge he poses is among the biggest things I’ve had to overcome as a player.

1 Absolute Radiance

The Ultimate Madness

As the only boss I’ve never defeated, despite how many times I’ve tried, Absolute Radiance sits comfortably atop the list of the hardest bosses in Hollow Knight.

The Pantheon of Hallownest is one of the most unforgiving challenges in the gaming industry, not only because it demands consistency and patience, but because this demonic being awaits you at the end.

No other boss in Hollow Knight has more health, attacks faster, demands more mastery of mechanics, or is more imposing than Absolute Radiance, which gives me terrifying flashbacks just by typing its name.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to beat it, but as the only boss who has bested me for good, it’s the most vivid demonstration of the incredible challenge Hollow Knight presents.
