Helldivers 2 Is Struggling With Its Own Success And The “Technical Debt” Of Rapid Growth

The Helldivers 2 steam engine has been going for well over a year now, and unlike many other live-service games of its nature, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. In fact, the latest update has just brought back many more players, proving the game’s community health is better than ever.

Sadly, Helldivers 2 isn’t healthy in all aspects, as a wave of bugs has arisen during the latest Into The Unjust update. From crashes, frame drops, to general issues, this latest update seems to have broken the camel’s back, and the Helldivers 2 community is seeking answers.

Luckily, Arrowhead CEO and Helldivers 2 boss, Shams Jorjani, was back on Discord answering community questions. In this discussion, he expresses not only the guiding problems within Helldivers 2 that have caused these issues up to this point, but also how later updates and patches will hopefully mean no more massive bugs on this scale will take place for the future of Helldivers 2.

Patching Helldivers 2’s One Step At A Time

The first important question Jorjani answered was whether some massive hotfixes would patch the immediate issues. To this, he said that when “things get too bad we go with a hotfix. But these too have risk.” At this point, though, it was clear the guiding issue outweighed any potential risk, and so hotfixes were issued for this latest update.

When asked about why many of these issues are happening, Jorjani gave a few answers. For one, he expresses how “the technical debt is crippling.” However, he remains solid that “with the Xbox release behind us, we’ll be able to take a much better stab at it.”

In terms of PC crashes, he explains that the problem mainly stems from the PC hardware used at the studio, and how it may be more challenging to reproduce fixes and updates on older hardware. Regarding the general bugs, most community members are requesting a comprehensive health update, which may be planned for the future.

A health update may address multiple issues with the game, including the recent bugs, and also alleviate the overwhelming size of the game, which on PC has skyrocketed to over 140GB, approximately 100GB larger than it is on console.

In terms of current bug fixes, he explains that it is a bit of “a game of whack a mole.” If you’re planning on playing Helldivers 2 for this latest update, however, most of the bigger issues have already been fixed.

Given the scale Helldivers 2 has grown within the last year, it’s no surprise that at least a few persistent issues have popped up; after all, it happens to most games. To ensure that these issues won’t arise in the future, he explains that they need to learn how to “improve existing systems AND build new ones.”

For general health, he expresses how “every update is also a health update.” But, given how big an issue this latest update has been, it’s clear that Arrohead isn’t ruling out having a solely dedicated health update for the future, one that may also help out with that massive download size on PC.

For one, it’s incredibly admirable that the CEO of Arrowhead is so active in the community. Although this latest update led to more discussions about issues and bugs than the actual update itself, at least the developers have their ears open and are keen to keep Helldivers 2 growing for the future.
