Avowed is an excellent RPG, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it grow a cult following over time.
In my review, I said, “Avowed proves that bigger isn’t always better. Instead of making a game that tries to outsize everything on the market, Obsidian stayed true to its vision and delivered a polished experience that I fell in love with.”
So, after the credits roll, what happens when you’re looking to continue the adventure? You can replay it again, sure, or you can dive into the Pillar of Eternities series. Those games have drastically different gameplay, though. What if you’re looking for a game similar to Avowed? Then, I recommend checking out these eight titles.
8 The Outer Worlds
Avowed but in space
It makes sense to start with Obsidian Entertainment’s most recent RPG.
Yes, Avowed shares a lot of the DNA of Obsidian’s Sci-Fi RPG experience. It’s a “shorter” game compared to its contemporaries, which trades in a sprawling, lengthy experience for a more compact, focused affair.

The Outer Worlds is quintessentially Obsidian.
All the highs of Avowed are on full display here. The gameplay is incredibly enjoyable, the companions are iconic, and it’s an excellent experience well worth playing, especially with a sequel on its way.
Ironically, all the issues I had with Avowed are also on full display, particularly regarding a lack of enemy variety and somewhat shallow systems. What I’m trying to say here is that if you want a Sci-Fi clone of Avowed, play The Outer Wilds.
7 Fallout: New Vegas
One of the best
If you go further back in time through Obsidian’s history, you’ll arrive at Fallout: New Vegas.
Many argue that this is the best Fallout game of all time. While I disagree (sorry, I can’t ignore those bugs), there’s no denying the quality of New Vegas. It’s a game everyone should play at least once.
The strength lies in the writing and characters. Some of Avowed’s best moments are the organic conversations and character backstories from your companions. It proves that Obsidian is still more than capable of delivering quality writing.
If you’re looking for a well-written first-person RPG, it’s hard to find better than Fallout: New Vegas.
6 Dishonored
A classic we want to see return
As much as I enjoyed some of Avowed’s writing, far and away my favorite part of the game is the combat. It reminded me of the high points of Dishonored.
Like Dishonored, Avowed’s combat felt free-flowing, creative, and fluid. It works best when you’re constantly on your toes, dodging enemy attacks while working to unleash a devastating combination of attacks.
Combat in Dishonored takes things one step further, acting like a puzzle. Its combination of action, abilities, and stealth gameplay works extremely well together. Part of the beauty of Dishonored is the ability to approach missions in various ways.
I spent most of my time in Avowed, stumbling upon enemies and finding creative ways to kill enemies. It made me think back to Dishonored, and now I’m thinking it’s time to play it again. I’d give anything for Bethesda to bring the franchise back.
Close shut the jaws of oblivion
It was inevitable that Avowed would be compared to an Elder Scrolls game. I’m going with my favorite in the series: Oblivion.
There are two reasons here. While Avowed’s world isn’t as open and expansive as Oblivion’s Tamriel, there’s still so much joy from stumbling upon dungeons or enemies and jumping head-first into the action. Additionally, like Oblivion, Avowed has an excellent balance between its main story and side quests.
I could spend so much time in either game getting lost in the world, completing every quest, talking to everyone I could, and exploring the secrets of the world.
With the Oblivion remake (reportedly) on the way, I’m super excited to see how well it holds up with an overhaul of the game’s combat.
4 Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
An underrated gem
Out of all the RPGs you could play after Avowed, Kingdoms of Amalur is the one where it straight up feels like you’re stepping back in time and playing Avowed in the early 2010s.
Everything, from the gameplay, to the setting, atmosphere, and presentation is a perfect match. In some ways, it feels like Kingdoms of Amalur inspired Avowed.
Both games are inspired by classic RPG games and experiences but forgo the in-depth, crunchy mechanics for a more compact, accessible experience. There’s no need for dice rolls or stat checks here. It’s just solid gameplay that keeps you entertained throughout.
Kingdoms of Amalur has become a sleeper hit over the years, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see that happen with Avowed as well.
3 Mass Effect
One of the best games ever made
Hear me out here.
Like Avowed, Mass Effect feels a little rough around the edges. It’s clear that a bulk of the development time went to building up its world, characters, and systems. Yet, despite this, it’s a fantastic game.

Mass Effect has companion-based combat that’s a delight, even if Avowed outshines it. But the calling card of Mass Effect is the story. Not just its main narrative but all of its characters.
I enjoyed my time talking to Avowed’s companions more than I expected. It reminded me of how much I loved learning about Mass Effect’s cast of characters and how I grew to love them and their stories.
Oh, and yes, the voice actor for Garrus is in Avowed.

At first glance, this one feels like a stretch. Fable 2 is a different style of RPG, one focusing on action-oriented gameplay and your choices and actions changing the world around you.
Avowed gives you choices, but none are anywhere near this impactful. So why is Fable 2 an excellent choice for Avowed? The combat.
Fable’s combat has always been a delight, and even today it holds up extremely well.
Although Avowed’s combat is miles ahead of Fable 2, there’s still something satisfying about Fable’s action RPG experience.
The fun of Fable is from playing the way you want, doing as you wish in the world. If you’ve finished Avowed and want a fun action RPG, Fable 2 is an excellent choice.
1 Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
A perfect RPG experience
As much as Avowed had a good run upon release, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is the far superior game. It delivers an incredible, authentic RPG experience in a way that few games can.
In our review, we said, “Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is […] a cinematic, historically charged epic with a sublime open world to explore, a depth of systems to master, a wealth of meticulously designed quests to complete.” It might well be the benchmark for modern RPGs.
If you’re someone who enjoyed the experience of Avowed but was left wanting more, this is the answer. It builds on the game’s foundations for a much deeper, meatier experience.
