The time to fire up the Battlefield theme song in a loop draws ever nearer, but for a select group of people, the fun already starts this week.

MP1st obtained a copy of a Battlefield Labs invitation email urging the chosen players to RSVP by midnight today.

This is the first confirmed session of EA’s public playtesting program, which the publishing giant hopes will help bring the Battlefield franchise back on track after over a decade of mediocrity in the struggle against Call of Duty.

According to the email, players will get to “test concepts and mechanics” during the upcoming play test event, which will reportedly take place on March 7.

Electronic Arts and the Battlefield development team, now split between multiple studios, have not commented publicly on the specifics of this week’s test session. The expectation is that players will have limited exposure to the new game, with an overall duration of around two hours of play time.

This measured approach to introducing the upcoming Battlefield sequel to the community is in line with EA’s delicate handling of the franchise after a series of poor releases.

When Is Battlefield Coming Out?

The next Battlefield game sits in an awkward spot as far as expectation management goes. There is no known title, storyline, or a concrete release date, but the developers have been transparent about the intangibles that matter to veteran players.

According to an Electronic Arts investors’ meeting last month, the company had its sights set on putting the game out sometime before April 2026.

The announcement sparked joy among FPS lovers, especially after Bohemia Interactive revealed that ARMA 4 would only come in 2027.

The euphoria was short-lived, however. EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson came out less than a day later to clarify that “some things happening in the year” could lead to a postponement.

Both Ghost Recon and Battlefield then need to worry about Activision, which is expected to release another Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game sometime in 2026.

Of course, all of the discussion about the effect of release dates misses the forest for the trees.

The main thing keeping Battlefield from scoring big sales right now is a lack of trust from loyal players and an unappealing product for prospective new ones.

This week’s Battlefield Labs session is one of many, but it marks the first chance EA has of getting back in the fight for the FPS crown.
