The wait is almost over, or at least that’s what the Battlefield social media page hints at. The Electronic Arts flagship shooter franchise has had successive disappointments, which project leaders partially attribute to a lack of transparency with the wider community during development.
According to the short and sweet communiqué, Battlefield will have a community testing program, and the full details will be revealed tomorrow. EA expects to have the relevant info out around 17:00 CET/08:00 PDT.

EA & Ubisoft Have One Last Shot To Dethrone Call Of Duty
These major publishers have one last shot at dethroning Activision.
Accompanying the announcement is a concept art piece showing an American M1A2 Abrams tank in desert paint rolling beneath an overpass in a destroyed city, reinforcing earlier reports that the game would have a contemporary setting.
Although there are no readily identifiable features, some players suggest it could be Baghdad or Cairo based on the architecture. An earlier promotional piece shows a major battle raging over the Gibraltar strait.
Battlefield Strikes Back
Although the Battlefield franchise helped define mainstream large-scale shooters, EA has struggled to keep players engaged for at least a decade.
The publisher’s attempts to refresh the series ran through WW1, WW2, and even a near-futuristic entry with Battlefield 2042. Although Battlefield 1 scored reasonably high, the game came nowhere near the mainstream appeal of older titles.
In what may be a last-ditch attempt to bring the franchise to its heyday, EA broke from the script and appointed multiple studios to handle the development. DICE, traditionally the franchise’s sole showrunner, is in charge of the multiplayer side of the new Battlefield.
To keep the single-player campaign engaging, EA appointed Motive Studios. The company put out the widely-acclaimed Dead Space remake, but the jury is still out on what it can do with an original story.
Another fine addition to the lineup is Criterion Games of Black fame, one of the best console shooters ever made. The seasonal multiplayer content has been assigned to Ripple Effect.

EA’s New Battlefield Aims To Revive the Glory Days with a Modern Setting
EA has finally unveiled their plans for the next Battlefield title, which will stick to the fundamentals of the series.
In September last year, the new Battlefield project lead said the game had been going through closed testing runs for about a year, validating the grounded, modern setting and more classic gameplay styles.
Although internal testing is extremely valuable for more technical problem-solving, the expected large-scale community playtest coming tomorrow takes things to a new level.
Running the upcoming Battlefield through your average player should help EA understand, and hopefully fix, less quantifiable issues in areas like the gameplay loop or the overall worldbuilding.
As Dragon Age: The Veilguard showed, EA investors have unforgiving sales expectations no matter how good the artistic outcome. The four studios running the show for Battlefield have an uphill battle until release, but it is a winnable one.
