However, once you start the game, you will be greeted with the regular screen asking you to pick your difficulty. With four (eventually five) different difficulty selections, it can be hard to know which one is right. Here’s a guide to help you out.

Difficulty Settings Explained

Unicorn Overlord - Difficulty Settings

There are originally four different difficulties for players to pick from, with a fifth one unlockable later on after completing the game for the first time. Here’s the in-game description of each of these difficulties:

  • Story: A difficulty focused on the enjoyment of the story. (This is recommended for newcomers to strategy games.)
  • Normal: A standard difficulty focused on fair, tactical battles. (This is recommended for regulars of strategy games.)
  • Tactical: A difficulty focused around tactical gameplay. (This is recommended for those well-versed in strategy games.)
  • Expert: A difficulty focused on pushing your tactical mind to its limits. (This is recommended for those who truly want to be challenged in their strategy games.)

There is another difficulty setting that you can unlock in New Game Plus. Here is a breakdown of that setting:

  • True Zenoiran: A difficulty for players who wish to know the despair of unceasing torture. Members of defeated units cannot be deployed, and difficulty cannot be changed once selected. (This is recommended for those who have completed the game on Expert and want an even harder challenge.)

What Is The Difference In Difficulty?

There are two major factors to consider when you are deciding on a difficulty. The amount of Stamina your troops have is lowered with each difficulty and the damage enemies will do to you is heightened. Another thing to note is that in Expert and True Zenoiran settings, you can only use 10 items per stage, meaning you truly have to plan well in order to survive. With True Zenoiran, death is also permanent. However, it is important to note that you will get more Valor Gain for taking down enemies in higher settings.

What Difficulty Should You Play On?

The truth is, the difficulty you play is up to you. For most regular players, playing on Story or Normal will give you a great experience while also allowing you to truly take in the story. If you’re well-versed in strategy games and want a challenge, consider doing Tactician or Expert mode.

Remember, you can always change your difficulty at any moment (unless playing True Zenorian) by going to the settings menu.
