Ubisoft Confirms There Will Be No ‘Pay-To-Win’ Mechanics In XDefiant

Highlights

  • Ubisoft claims there are no pay-to-win mechanics in XDefiant, as all purchasable gameplay-impacting content is also unlockable through challenges.
  • Casual lobbies won’t use skill-based matchmaking in XDefiant, a popular choice among ‘arcade shooter’ fans.
  • Ubisoft promises amazing customisation options for active players, unlocking content through Battle Pass or challenges.

With just a couple of days until the release of Ubisoft’s upcoming first-person shooter XDefiant, the publisher released a statement outlining its monetisation plans.

“There are no pay-to-win mechanics,” the post reads, in bold. “Any gameplay impacting content that is purchasable is also unlockable through challenges to ensure fair play amongst our community.”

XDefiant Just Announced One Feature That Actually Might Make It A ‘COD Killer’

Ubisoft has just announced a game-changing feature for XDefiant.

While no multiplayer title would ever openly admit to being pay-to-win, these firm words from Ubisoft will be seen as a promising sign for prospective players. The announcement that XDefiant’s casual lobbies won’t use skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) has also proved popular among ‘arcade shooter’ fans, as SBMM is an unpopular feature of Call of Duty.

The statement continues – specifying rewards available to active players, customisation options and the type of content players can expect at launch. “Our goal is to be providing amazing customisation options that reward all of the matches, victories, and even defeats that you put into the game,” reads the post. “As you play that one more match, all of your time and energy will work towards unlocking content either through the Battle Pass or challenges.”

A list of the types of rewards players can expect is given, including battle pass rewards, in-game challenges, weapon mastery and community participation rewards.

Nothing is surprising about Ubisoft’s announcement, as XDefiant looks set to be monetised similarly to most popular free-to-play games. The inclusion of daily challenges and cosmetics to reward active players is likewise unsurprising.

Ubisoft ends the post promising “reflection and evaluation” based on player feedback, especially regarding customisation options.

There is anticipation surrounding XDefiant as arcade shooter fans search for a competitor to Call of Duty. Pre-release coverage of XDefiant has been broadly positive, and comparisons to the universally beloved Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 have been made.

XDefiant releases May 21.
