In the midst of the global pandemic, I stumbled upon a game that would become a beacon of light in a dark time. Tell Me Why, developed by Don’t Nod, not only offered an engrossing detective story with a light sci-fi element but also featured one of the first mainstream games with a trans male character as one of its leads. This game is a three-part episodic adventure that I played during a period of intense personal reflection and societal upheaval. Its impact on me was profound and remains a favorite to this day.

Unmasking Secrets: A Detective Delight

Tell Me Why follows the story of twins Tyler and Alyson as they reunite after years apart to sell their childhood home in the small town of Delos Crossing, Alaska. The game dives deep into their troubled past, revealing secrets about their mother and their family’s history. The twins share a unique supernatural bond, allowing them to communicate telepathically and share memories. This bond is central to the gameplay, as you navigate through these memories, uncovering different perspectives and piecing together the truth.

What captivated me was the way Tell Me Why intertwined its narrative with engaging gameplay mechanics. The plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat, eager to unravel the mysteries surrounding the twins’ past. Each revelation was a meticulously crafted piece of a larger puzzle, making the journey through the game’s story both thrilling and emotionally resonant.

Dialogues that Speak Volumes

Tyler looks on in Tell Why Me

One of the standout features of Tell Me Why is its well-written dialogue. The game’s narrative is driven by conversations between characters, and the dialogue feels authentic and impactful. Tyler, in particular, is a fully realized queer person, and stepping into his shoes provided a window into the complexities of revisiting one’s hometown after coming out as your true self. The game’s commitment to authenticity is evident in every interaction, making it easy to empathize with Tyler’s experiences and struggles.

Playing as Tyler was especially meaningful to me during the pandemic. As a black and queer individual, I was grappling with the realization of how divided the world had become. The political climate in the United States was fraught with tension, and I found myself making difficult decisions about who would remain in my life. Tell Me Why offered a sense of solidarity and understanding, reflecting the importance of representation in media. The game’s portrayal of Tyler’s journey resonated deeply, providing a sense of comfort and affirmation during a tumultuous time.

Choices Matter: A Personalized Journey

Tell Me Why offers multiple endings, allowing your choices to shape the story’s outcome. This aspect of the game added a layer of personal investment, as my decisions had tangible consequences for the characters’ futures. For me, the “found family” route was the most poignant. In this ending, Tyler pursues a romance with Michael and discovers a supportive community in Juneau. This choice led Tyler to continue his career path as a mentor at the Juneau Coalition for Equality, an outcome that resonated with me as a teacher.

The game’s exploration and puzzles were equally charming. The nostalgic elements, combined with the fairy tale angle, created a sense of whimsy and enchantment. As someone with a sister and a complex relationship with my mother, the themes of recollection and reconciliation struck a chord. The sci-fi twist added an element of intrigue, blending the fantastical with the realistic in a way that captured the essence of childhood imagination and survival.

Pride and Progress: A Game for the Ages

Tell Me Why Alyson & Tyler Sitting & Looking Sad

Tell Me Why holds a special place in my heart, particularly during Pride Month. Each year, the developers allow people to purchase the game for free, ensuring that no one interested in it has an excuse not to play. They also encourage you to donate to credible trans support programs instead of purchasing the game, highlighting their commitment to meaningful representation and support for the trans community.

The developers’ dedication to creating an authentic experience is evident in their collaboration with trans support groups and individuals from the community. This care and consideration are reflected in Tyler’s story, making Tell Me Why a landmark in gaming for its portrayal of a trans main character.

As I look to the future, I hope Don’t Nod revisits this universe from a different character’s perspective or introduces a nonbinary main character in a new game. I’m also excited about their upcoming game, “Lost Records: Bloom and Rage,” which seems to be their answer to creating their own version of Life Is Strange. For now, I’ll continue to enjoy Tell Me Why, appreciating its contributions to storytelling and representation in gaming.
