Starfield’s June Update Is Causing Fans To Review Bomb The Game On Steam

Highlights

  • Starfield’s Creation Kit update introduces paid mods, sparking controversy over expensive prices and required real-money purchases for content.
  • Fans are upset by the creation credits system, expressing dissatisfaction with the cost of mods and calling for lower pricing.
  • The negative reviews on Steam about Starfield’s paid mods reflect disappointment in having to pay for content that feels like it should have been included in the original game.

Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase last weekend, the latest Starfield update finally saw the arrival of Creation Kit. While the special toolkit allows users to create mods with the same system used by Bethesda, some of the Bethesda-made story content has sparked outrage in the community, leading to a flurry of negative reviews on Steam.

Bethesda Game Studios has always actively encouraged its community to mod their games, with Starfield just being the latest of the studio’s titles to receive the Creation Kit program. Unfortunately, it makes use of Creation Credits, which can only be purchased with real-life money. If you want to purchase 1,000 Creation Credits, it’ll cost you $10.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Switch version is once again in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

While the use of microtransactions isn’t exactly out of the ordinary, fans have already expressed that the prices of the mods that come from the Creation Kit should be a lot lower than they actually are. Now, in the hope that Bethesda will make some sort of change to the paid mods, fans have begun review-bombing the game on Steam.

Starfield’s newest update was released for Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam on June 9th. Then, just one day later, Starfield received well over 200 negative reviews on Steam, followed by another 90 reviews today. With still plenty of time left in the day, the number of negative reviews could quite easily continue to rack up after the publication of this article.

“The game already feels incomplete and now they want me to pay more for stuff that should have already been in the game on launch,” one negative review reads. While another says, “having to pay for content that should have been in the game from the start is just wrong.”

Many of the users have taken issue specifically with the new Tracker Alliance missions that were added in the June update. While the initial mission is included for free in the update, Bethesda noted that the second mission, known as The Vulture, “is available within the new Creations menu.” Players then quickly discovered that they’d need to pay $7 to continue the quest.
