Starfield: Best Tech Build

There are a lot of different ways to play through Starfield, and a lot of those ways are going to revolve around piloting your ship and making use of all the futuristic tech that is available to you. This means building your character around the Tech field to give you access to all the best that the game’s technology has to offer.

The Clinic is one of Starfield’s many unique locations players can visit; here’s where to find it.

Creating a Tech build is quite easy in the game, and as long as you know what you are doing from the beginning, you will be able to create the perfect Tech-oriented character. This guide will break down the best Background, Traits, Perks, Weapons, and Armor you’ll want to use to become the ultimate Tech god.

Best Background For Tech Build

Starfield - Backgrounds Bounty Hunter

When you are creating your character at the very beginning of the game, you will be asked to choose their Background. Doing so provides more than a little bit of lore for your character, as each Background also gives your character different buffs and debuffs to different areas.

For the Tech build, you will want to choose the Bounty Hunter Background. This is due to the boosts you get to piloting your ship in the game. Upon starting the story, Bounty Hunters are given the Piloting, Targeting Control Systems, and Boost Pack Training Skills.

The Piloting Skill will help your character become a better pilot when they are out in space, the Targeting Control Systems will improve the effectiveness of missile systems on your ship, and the Boost Pack Training will help you get around on-foot.

Best Traits For Tech Build

Starfield - Spaced Trait

There are two Traits that you will want to select for your Tech build:

  • Spaced: your health and endurance will be improved while you are in space, at the expense of being decreased on a planet’s surface. Tech builds are focused on space-adventuring and using your ship, so it makes sense to have this Trait to help you when doing so.
  • Taskmaster: if you have a crew member trained in a certain ship system, that system will automatically repair itself whenever its damage goes below 50%.This means another buff when using your ship — and one less thing to worry about in the thick of shit-to-ship combat.

Best Perks For Tech Build

Starfield: the tech skill tree is shown with a few dedicated choices, including security

There will be a handful of Perks that you will want to unlock from the Tech and Science sections of the Skill Tree.

Perk Name

Type of Perk

Perk Summary

Aneutronic Fusion

Science

Engine Systems

This Perk will cause your ship to go faster, which helps a lot in space combat.

Beyond these Perks, it is up to you how you want to unlock different abilities for your character. These are just the ones that are important to the Tech build.

Best Weapons & Armor For Tech Build

Starfield Venator

This section is a little harder to nail down, as there aren’t a ton of Weapons or Armor in the game that are clearly the best option for a Tech build. This part of the build is really going to come down to you and how you want to play the game.

You will need to choose your Weapons based on how you like to play the game. Since Tech builds are largely focused on how you fly your ship and your effectiveness at doing so, it leaves it pretty open to how you want to fight when on-foot.

As for Armor, the really only recommendation is any of the Starborn Armor Sets that you can unlock when you gain access to New Game Plus. Now, this means you have to finish the game’s story one time, so it will be a bit of time before you are able to unlock this armor, but there’s plenty to look forward in New Game Plus and beyond.

Before that, feel free to use a set like the Mantis Armor, which you can get early on and provides some great stats for your character.
