It’s an unprecedented time for the videogames industry with layoffs looming around every corner, and another blow has come from League of Geeks. The Australian-based studio has just announced its decision to go into “hibernation”, but the leads have assured fans of Solium Infernum and Armello that support will continue.

Solium Infernum is this year’s turn-based strategy game and is a remake of the 2009 version from independent developer Cryptic Comet. The title still holds its place in Open Critic’s Top 10 games of 2024, and we awarded the title a 9.3 out of 10 rating in our review, praising its stunning art style, unique strategy gameplay, and excellent soundtrack.

We sat down with Trent Kusters, co-founder of League of Geeks for a hands-off preview of Solium Infernum.

League Of Geeks Announces The Team’s Extended Time Off

In a post published on the League of Geeks website, co-founders and director, Trent Kusters, Blake Mizzi, and Ty Carey wrote a transparent statement regarding the immediate future of the studio and how the team will manage its existing games during an unexpected leave of absence from the industry.

Stating the studio’s 13-year run, it was decided that the League of Geeks team would go into “hibernation for the foreseeable future and take some extended time off” due to the economic situation within the industry and the fact that they are an entirely independent studio.

It was also confirmed that a “vast majority” of the team had already moved on to other endeavors, and those who remained would be taking a “well deserved break over the next few months”. Additionally, the leads weren’t sure if League of Geeks would be resurrected, but a sense of pride in the experiences and achievements gathered as a team and with members of the community who believed in their projects was expressed.

League Of Geeks Will Continue To Support Its Games

Stating that the remaining team would be indulging in “rest, some play and other opportunities”, the heads assured fans that the studio’s two games, Solium Infernum and Armello, would “remain online and will be supported during this period”.

Solium Infernum Leviathan Rising

It was noted that Solium Infernum’s sales revenue “cannot fund further active development or DLC”, but the studio still has “a couple of treats” to share with the fandom, some bug fixes, and minor content to address.

Armello will continue to rotate seasonal content and the studio confirmed its hiatus would not affect the release of the Armello Board Game, as its development is in the hands of King of the Castle Games.

Finally, Jumplight Odyssey failed to find investments to back further development, therefore, the title’s development has been put on hiatus. However, the team is aiming to bring the game into Early Access within the next 12 months, even though the “fully realized v1.0” is unlikely to reach the team’s original vision.
