PUBG’s Production Director Talks About How Mechanics Have Evolved In Erangel Classic Event

Highlights

  • PUBG’s Erangel Classic Event brings back old-school gunplay mechanics and armored UAZs for nostalgic gameplay moments.
  • Players will feel like they’re back in 2017 with updated UI, weapon recoil, and classic map battles in this event.
  • The event aims to recapture the essence of early PUBG, attracting loyal players and offering a trip down memory lane.

For those looking for a little taste of nostalgia, PUBG will be bringing back a classic for long-term players with its upcoming Erangel Classic Event. First hitting Steam’s Early Access back in 2017, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was a roaring success straight out of the gate as it brought in and broke Steam’s record with 3.2 million concurrent players. Even though Erangel was the game’s first map and is still used today, it has undergone dramatic changes and optimizations over the years, but the brand-new update will take players right back to the battle royale’s fondest memories.

PUBG’s production director, Taehyun Kim, discusses the game’s mechanics in the Erangel Classic Event, and how players could feel they are back in 2017 again due to making weapons feel like they did at the start.

Nostalgic PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

Speaking to Game Rant, Kim said that PUBG players meant not get a true reincarnation of those early days due to it being impractical to implement outdated assets that players may not appreciate, but that they instead wanted to introduce a more robust UI and gunplay balance when it comes to weapon recoil. This is a callback to when players would drop onto the map and get a sense of urgency when downing another player as it would take much longer to do.

“Recoil is the biggest difference in the gunplay between the old and present PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS,” said Kim. “We had balance adjustments mainly for the core weapon groups like ARs and DMRs, which led to a huge increase in the recoil with the introduction of new weapons. To recapture the old gunplay, we had to reduce their recoil.”

As well as being able to reminisce about the panic that set in due to the slow recoil of the game’s ARs, armored UAZs are back on the scene too, where players could receive one by firing a flare gun and use it for an added layer of protection. “We hope this vehicle effectively offers the old Erangel’s gameplay and driving experience without damaging the overall balance of the game.” expressed Kim.

Heading back to when it was in its prime seems like a solid way forward for the battle royale title and a great way to herd back some of its most loyal players who may have moved on to other shooters. The Erangel Classic event will run from May 14 to May 28 on PC and for players on console, they can look forward to getting stuck in from May 23 to June 6.
