When you are dropped onto the island of Palpagos, you are met with a lot of land, but figuring out which spots are the best is probably one of the biggest decisions you will make at first.

You are going to find plenty of viable places that work in their own way. It really comes down to what the surrounding area provides for you. Plus, as you progress in the game, you will get the ability to have more than one base. So, what you really need to know is which spots will offer you some good resources. Fort Ruins

Why It’s A Good Choice

• plenty of Ore in the surrounding area

Just to the southwest of the Fort Ruins, you can find a really great location for a base that resides on a cliff. You will need to level up for tools like the Grappling Gun and probably a flying mount to help you climb up. Once you do, you are largely set with regard to your defenses. Any invaders have to take the path up to get to you, and that means plenty of time to rain the pain down on them.

There are also some good sources for ingredients, but Ore is the main one that you will find around the area. These respawn often, and you can use ore to craft a lot of good items in the mid-game. You will be able to craft better weapons, firearams, buildings, and equipment with ore. It’s a great place to build up your arsenal.

Hillside

The Sealed Realm of the Guardian has a great spot to the east. This is an area where you will have access to a good amount of Ore and Coal. Coal is going to come into play in the later part of the game, and so this could be a great place to settle another base once you unlock the ability to have more than one.

There is also a Beegarde location right by it. When you have a ranch, you can get some Honey production up and running. Honey is a must-have in the game, and it’s not the easiest resource to find.

The Twilight Dunes are in the northern area of the map, and come with a couple of habitats: Digitoise and Dumud. Both of these can be farmed effectively to get a lot of High Quality Pal Oil, which is going to be in a lot of recipes in the game, including firearms.

It is also far from any Fast Travel points, which can be tough for getting around the map quickly. Once you have it settled, your camp will become its own Fast Travel point for you.

Windswept Plateau

You can find this spot when you start the game in the default location. Just head down the hill and you will be on the plateau. Fortunately, there are a lot of good resources in the area. They’re not the most rare ones available, but they are the basic ones that will help you easily get your first base up.

There are also a lot of good opportunities for defenses in this area, as there are a ton of shorter cliffs that you can find scattered around the hillside. If you build your base against these cliffs, you already have a massive wall built that you can use to protect yourself and your Pals. This is huge for Raids when you are early on in the game. Raids won’t be a common occurrence, but they do happen, and they can be a terrifying thing when you are just starting out and unprepared.
