Brazil has been picked to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027 in what will be a historic move. For the first time, a South American nation will be hosting the global women’s tournament since it began in 1991.

The FIFA Congress voted 119-78 in favour of Brazil in a curtailed two-field face-off between the South American nation and a joint proposal from Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. USA and Mexico’s joint bid was withdrawn in April and South Africa pulled out in November.

“We are a South American country that achieved the victory for women’s soccer,” Brazil’s soccer federation president Ednaldo Rodrigues said. He also reflected on the recent flooding that has devastated parts of the country.

“After the things that impact all Brazilians — a catastrophe due to the climate change — our achievement today, the first Women’s World Cup in South America, will help strengthen us. It is a victory for the world and for women’s football,” he added.

“Congratulations to Brazil. We will have the best World Cup in Brazil. Many thanks as well to the BNG bid, who have been fantastic,” Gianni Infantino, FIFA President said.
