Homeworld 3 Devs Say They Have The Right Ingredients For A “Solid RTS Experience”

Homeworld 3 has been one of 2024’s most anticipated titles for fans of the strategy genre, making it among the 25 most wishlisted games on Steam. After 20 years in the making, the Blackbird Interactive RTS game was finally released for PC on May 13.


After all this time, the sci-fi title sure had big shoes to fill when it came to mastering the genre with the likes of Command and Conquer and Ages of Empires looming in its shadow but, even amid underwhelming reviews on SteamDB, Blackbird Interactive has said that the game embodies important elements that make Homeworld 3 a fun and meaningful RTS.

Player Choice Matters In Homeworld 3

Speaking to Game Rant, Homeworld 3 Game Director Lance Mueller and Lead Producer Iain Myers-Smith spoke about what they wanted to implement into the space combat title and what they thought made it stand out from other games in the genre. To really make any RTS game stand out, developing a strong strategy component is always key, coupled with stellar tactical decisions in an immersive and exciting environment to give it an extra layer of depth.


“What really makes a fun Homeworld RTS–and we definitely got a lot of feedback during the demo about this–is bringing in your fleet and having them be able to tactically do different scenarios around the terrain and really have those long engagements that are as cinematic as you’ve ever wished,” said Homeworld 3 Game Director Lance Mueller. “I think player decision-making is a key foundational element for RTS in general, and Homeworld RTS is making player choices matter.

Mueller went on to express that they wanted to make tactical decisions and fleet composition meaningful to the player, as this is “what adds up to a really solid RTS experience as the result of Homeworld’s RTS experience.” He also spent a little time reminiscing about the first Homeworld and how awe-inspiring it was for him to adventure into grand environments as a 13-year-old and wanted to recreate that same feeling with Homeworld 3’s first pillar.


For fans of modding, Homeworld 3 would be the perfect playground given how vast and moldable it is, but players may have to wait a little longer to get creative. Blackbird Interactive said in a post that they have “been working with members of our modding community behind the scenes who have been giving us ongoing feedback” but “Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen challenges, our custom Homeworld 3 Unreal 4 editor will be initially unavailable at the launch of Homeworld 3.”
