Grand Theft Auto 6’s Trailer Includes Multiple Real-Life Crime References

Highlights

  • Rockstar Games has released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 earlier than planned due to a leak, inviting fans to watch the official version on their YouTube channel.
  • The trailer showcases various real-life crime references, including nods to “Miami’s Joker” and a viral video of a woman dual-wielding hammers.
  • Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to contain more hidden references to real-life events, so we encourage fans to share any they notice.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. Although it premiered ahead of schedule due to a rather unfortunate circumstance, Rockstar Games has officially released the very first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6, and there are a few real-life crime references you might have missed.

GTA 6’s first trailer was due to be released later today, but Rockstar was dealt an unlucky hand after a grainy version of the trailer started to make the rounds online. The leak resulted in Rockstar releasing the trailer almost immediately after, urging fans to watch the real thing on their official YouTube channel.

The Lead Pair In GTA 6 Look Like A Couple Worth Caring About

A couple of real, sane people in an hyperreal, insane world.

If you somehow missed it, or you just want to watch it again for the hundredth time (I know I’m going to), we’ve included it below for your viewing pleasure:

The trailer has a lot to unpack, from the neon-kissed streets of Vice City, police chases, twerking women on top of cars, alligators strolling around stores, the list just goes on and on. But in the jam-packed trailer, it might have been easy to miss some real-life references to actual criminals. Of course, Grand Theft Auto has always been a comment on American society, so it’s no surprise to see some familiar faces in the trailer.

Arguably the most popular reference in the trailer is of “Miami’s Joker”, a criminal that went viral back in 2017 due to his rather unusual facial tattoos. Lawrence Sullivan became known as Miami’s Joker after being arrested for waving a gun at passing traffic in Miami, as reported by FOX News.

At 1 minute and 4 seconds into the trailer, an image of a man resembling Miami’s Joker can be seen. The news report (which was originally in Spanish and translated via Google) reads, “Confession written in ink (for tattoos) A tattoo on the neck that gave away himself, key to the conviction of a Leonida man.” The criminal seen in the trailer is a clear nod to the viral sensation of 2017, but it doesn’t stop there.

Shortly before GTA 6’s very own Miami Joker appears in the trailer, a middle-aged woman with dual-wielding hammers is seen. The shot can be seen 57 seconds into the trailer, with the woman exclaiming “Well, look who’s back.” The shot appears to be a reference to an incident that occurred back in 2020, when a video emerged online of a woman dual-wielding hammers and destroying both public and private property.

It appears as though the original incident was a racial attack, as the woman can be heard exclaiming “Go back to Mexico” at the individual behind the camera. According to ABC7, the woman was arrested but released from jail the following day, as the COVID-19 pandemic meant minor offenses were often quickly released.

There are sure to be plenty more references to real-life events hidden in Grand Theft Auto 6, and likely even a few more we missed in the trailer. If you notice any yourself, please be sure to let us know!
