Gamers Are Mocking EA In Hilarious Fashion For Wanting To Include Ads In Its Video Games

Highlights

  • EA CEO Andrew Wilson announced plans to increase profits by adding advertisements to $70 AAA video games.
  • The move was met with backlash from gamers, who mocked up hilarious examples of how the ads might look.
  • EA faced similar backlash in 2020 for including full-screen commercials in UFC 4, later removing the feature.

Earlier this week, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson announced that the company was looking to increase its profits even more. This time, by adding advertisements in its AAA video games, which already cost consumers $70 a go. As you can imagine, the response from the gaming community has been mostly negative, with some even mocking up hilarious examples of how the feature may work.

As reported by Tom’s Hardware, Wilson confirmed that the studio was looking into the idea during a Q&A section of the company’s latest earnings call. When asked by an investor about inserting advertisements into AAA games, Wilson said, “Advertising has an opportunity to be a meaningful driver of growth for us. We have teams internally in the company right now looking at how we do very thoughtful implementations inside of our game experiences.”

Ghost Of Tsushima’s PC Port Is Being Blocked In Certain Countries After Helldivers 2 Controversy

Ghost of Tsushima’s PC port is being blocked from purchase in certain countries, likely because its Legends mode requires users to link a PSN account.

This wouldn’t be the first time that EA has attempted to implement advertisements in its video games. Back in 2020, the studio received backlash from UFC 4 fans after including full-screen commercials for Amazon Prime’s The Boys. The advertisement was implemented during the replay of segment of fights, but EA would later go on to remove the feature due to the immense amount of backlash.

In a statement to Eurogamer, EA noted that advertisements was “not new to the UFC franchise,” though it was typically reserved to main menu tiles and Octagon logo placement. They would then go on to remove the full-screen advertisements from the game.

While there are certainly more tasteful ways to implement advertisements into video games, forcing them down your throat in the middle of an online game is not the way to do it. The studio’s CEO did say it was investigating “thoughtful” ways to implement adverts, but gamers certainly don’t have much faith in the studio.

Gamers Mock EA For Potential Ad Implementation

Star Wars Jedi Survivor Cal Kestis

While many blasted EA as “the worst video game company of all time,” others opted to create some hilarious mock-ups of what in-game adverts could look like. They’re all quite far-fetched and (hopefully) not what EA intends to implement, but given the company’s track record, there’s still a possibility that these memes aren’t that far off.

WARNING: The below clip includes spoilers for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Many of the memes used Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in their examples, as this is one of EA’s most well-known titles. However, others wondered what the feature would look like if it was implemented into other titles, such as Call of Duty. One of the franchises’ most iconic scenes has now been ruined in true dystopian fashion.

EA likely plans to implement adverts in much more subtle ways, especially after the backlash it received in 2020, but these mockups are hilarious nonetheless.
