Future Yoshi-P Final Fantasy Projects May See “Lighter Days” And I’m Here For It

Highlights

  • Yoshi-P and his team are considering a shift towards lighter storytelling, moving away from dark fantasy narratives.
  • Fans like me anticipate a return to whimsy and charm reminiscent of earlier Final Fantasy games.
  • The upcoming expansion, “Dawntrail,” hints at a new tone for Final Fantasy 14, evoking a sense of traditional heroics.

Having spent a decade delving into Final Fantasy 14’s intricate world and immersing myself in the darker tones of Final Fantasy 16, the news of Yoshi-P and his team considering a shift towards lighter storytelling fills me with anticipation. As hinted by Square Enix veteran Michael–Christopher Koji Fox (via an interview with GamesRadar), the prospect of departing from the realm of dark fantasy excites fans like myself, who yearn for narratives reminiscent of the franchise’s earlier charm.

“I look over at Yoshi-P every now and then and you can kind of tell he as well is like, ‘I am done with dark fantasy, I want to do something light again,” Koji Fox told GamesRadar. “”So I have a feeling that, whatever project I get put on next, there’s going to be this paradigm shift in that direction again.” I’m not surprised at all with this change in direction.

A Journey Through Darkness

As an adventurer in Final Fantasy 14 for more than ten years, I’ve journeyed across the sprawling landscapes of Eorzea, faced off against formidable adversaries, and cultivated lasting bonds crafted and re-envisioned by Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida and his team. With each expansion, I’ve eagerly embraced new challenges and narratives that have enriched my gaming experience. However, one particular chapter stands out among the rest—the Shadowbringers expansion.

During Shadowbringers, I embarked on a transformative journey as my character took on the mantle of the Hero of Darkness. It was a narrative shift that captivated me, turning the traditional notion of the Warrior of Light on its head. Instead of being heralded as a beacon of hope, I found myself grappling with the consequences of an overabundance of light, which threatened to consume and destroy the world.

The Warrior of Light takes a moment of reprieve in Final Fantasy 14

Then, a year ago, Final Fantasy 16 emerged as a stark departure from the familiar landscapes of Eorzea, plunging me into the depths of its most grim and politically charged fantasy yet. As Clive, I found myself in a one-person-army combat style, with the loyal hound Torgal by my side.

This gameplay dynamic gamified the heaviness of the narrative, immersing me in the loneliness and isolation of being the chosen hero. Even amidst fleeting moments of camaraderie, the overarching sense of solitude pervaded every aspect of the gameplay experience, leaving an indelible mark on my journey toward Final Fantasy 16’s haunting ending.

In other words, Yoshi-P knows his way around the dark hero’s narrative. But doing the same subversive dark narrative will eventually start to lose its proverbial luster. Even Yoshi-P is growing tired of dark fantasy.

Seeing “Lighter” Days

So when I stumbled upon the news that Yoshi-P and his team were contemplating a shift towards lighter themes for their next project, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement and anticipation. The prospect of returning to the realm of whimsy and charm, reminiscent of the earlier days of Final Fantasy, filled me with a sense of joy and nostalgia.

The traditional hero’s story, with its themes of bravery, sacrifice, and triumph over adversity, holds an enduring appeal. Rooted in mythology and literature, Joseph Campbell’s concept of the hero’s journey follows a protagonist as they embark on a transformative quest, facing trials and tribulations before emerging victorious, armed with newfound wisdom and strength.

For me, Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn encapsulates the essence of this archetypal narrative. I vividly recall the humble beginnings of my journey as a general adventurer, setting forth on a cart bound for the lush forests of Gridania. Clad in simple adventurer’s garb, I was beckoned by the whispers of the enigmatic Mother Crystal, heralding the start of an epic odyssey.

Final Fantasy 14 includes 20 jobs, which makes for a ton of choices for such a big game! This list breaks down the best ones for a beginner to try.

There’s a familiar comfort in the hero’s journey, a sense of reassurance amidst life’s uncertainties. As I navigate the trials and challenges within the virtual realm of video games, I find validation in experiencing my own personal hero’s journey mirrored in the digital landscape. Just as the heroes of myth and legend confront their inner demons and external foes, so too do I confront obstacles and adversities on my own path.

Looking at Yoshi-P’s works from a marketing perspective, I believe that persistently adhering to the dark and subversive narrative could become too closely associated with his name. This risk of pigeonholing could lead to a scenario where he feels compelled to produce similar stories until they lose their appeal, potentially placing him in an unfavorable situation.

The “Dawn” Of A New Day

The Warrior Of Light embarks on another journey in Final Fantasy 14

With the upcoming release of Dawntrail, the next expansion for Final Fantasy 14 slated for July, it’s evident that Yoshi-P’s tone is undergoing a shift. The imagery of the Warrior of Light embarking on uncharted seas evokes a sense of familiarity, reminiscent of the excitement I felt watching my character take their first steps into Gridania a decade ago. Having weathered the darkest of trials and saved not just the world, but the universe itself, there’s a certain anticipation for the traditional heroics that lie ahead.
