Fortnite Players Exploited A Glitch To Obtain Free Skins, Now They’re In V-Bucks Debt

Highlights

  • Fortnite players are finding themselves in “V-Bucks debt” after making use of an exploit.
  • Epic Games quickly began revoking purchased cosmetics, leaving players with negative V-Bucks.
  • According to Epic Games support, players must purchase more V-Bucks to reverse the negative balance.

Owing money to a bank is one thing, but being in debt to Epic Games is something I didn’t even think was possible. Apparently, it is, and there’s a whole host of Fortnite players who are reportedly in “V-Bucks debt” after using a recent exploit.

Multiple users have taken to X (formerly Twitter) in recent days to share screenshots of their V-Bucks debt. Trusted Fortnite leaker NotPalo was one of many users reporting on the incident, stating that Epic Games had begun removing cosmetic items and V-Bucks that had been acquired by “scamming” Microsoft.

While this is Fortnite’s first genuinely blind NPC, fans don’t think it’s as accurate as it should be.

V-Bucks scams are common among the Fortnite community. Prior to it being patched by Epic Games, players were using the “Argentina method” to acquire V-Bucks at a cheaper price. This method was fairly convoluted, as it required players to know somebody based in Argentina that was willing to purchase V-Bucks on your account from their location. Epic Games was quick to patch the exploit, but it didn’t take players long to work out another method.

According to NotPalo, players were reportedly purchasing V-Bucks via the Microsoft Store, using those V-Bucks to purchase cosmetic items in-game, and then requesting a refund. Microsoft reportedly allowed users to refund their V-Bucks multiple times, resulting in users essentially receiving free cosmetics.

Once again, Epic was quick to notice the scam and has already begun revoking any cosmetic items purchased via this method, leaving a plethora of users in debt. As you can see in the image below, one user not only lost their purchased skin but also owes Epic Games 6,150 V-Bucks.

According to the official Epic Games support page, being in V-Bucks debt is a very real thing, and the only way to get out of it is exactly what you’d expect: buy more V-Bucks. “You can reverse a negative V-Bucks balance by purchasing V-Bucks to cover the amount owed,” Epic Games says.

It should go without saying, but using any method other than purchasing V-Bucks directly from the in-game store (or via an official gift card) is a surefire way to find yourself in trouble. If you don’t want to end up in debt to Epic Games, it’s probably best if you don’t attempt any of these sketchy methods.
