Speaking with animals is one of the best parts of the game. After all, you get some interesting dialogue you wouldn’t find anywhere else. Here are all the animals you need to speak to while exploring Faerun.

How Do You Speak With Animals?

There are a few ways that you can speak with animals in the game. Here’s a list of them all.

  1. Use the Speak With Animals Spell
  2. Use the Potion of Animal Speaking
  3. Transform into an animal as a Druid

Bards, Druids, Clerics (Nature Domain), Rangers, Paladins (Oath of the Ancients), and Barbarians (Wildheart) can all learn the Speak With Animals Spell. Additionally, Forest Gnomes will automatically have the Spell.

This pigeon is locked in a war with the local cats. While it is hilarious, it is also required to complete the quest “Find The Missing Letters.”

Us is the brain-like creature you will first meet at the very beginning of the game. If you save it, you can meet it again in Act 2 and recruit it to your cause.

If you speak to the Owlbear and kill it, you can keep its cub at your camp for the rest of the game.

Rats

These rats are very weird at first and will tell you to leave. However, if you speak to them enough, you will learn they were actually a singular person at one point.

Scratch

Near the Owlbear Cave

If you find Scratch, you can speak to him and learn that he is waiting for his owner to wake up. Unfortunately, you will know that the owner is dead and can offer Scratch a place at your camp. If you do, he will appear later on and stay with you.

Strange Ox

Emerald Grove, Last Light Inn, & Rivington

The Strange Ox is the strangest animal on this list, by far. It is unclear what it is, but, if you help it each time you meet it, you can obtain some interesting items. It will also help in the final battle.

Tara

Camp (if you’re playing Gale) & Rivington

1 (if you’re playing Gale’s Origin) & 3 (all other playthroughs)

Tara is Gale’s cat and will give you some insight into the enigmatic Wizard. The cat will also sell some awesome items to you, making it worth it.
