Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree Climbs To ‘Mostly Positive’ Review Rating On Steam, Despite Continued Performance Issues

Highlights

  • FromSoftware released patch 1.12.2 to address Elden Ring DLC’s difficulty and balance issues.
  • The patch didn’t improve PC performance, but FromSoftware advised disabling raytracing to stabilize framerate.
  • Despite continued performance issues, Shadow of the Erdtree has a “mostly positive” Steam rating with over 56,000 reviews (70% positive).

Last week, FromSoftware released the first and last expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree. While it launched to critical acclaim, it didn’t take long for the DLC to receive a “mixed” review score on Steam, mainly due to performance issues and “unbalanced” boss fights.

To combat players’ complaints that Shadow of the Erdtree was too difficult, FromSoftware released patch 1.12.2 earlier this week, which aimed to make the beginning of the DLC a little easier by increasing the attack and damage negation for the first half of the maximum amount of Blessing enhancements, while also making the second half more gradual. The patch also increased the attack and damage negation granted by the final level of Blessing enhancements.

FromSoft’s Hidetaka Miyazaki is just like many of us when he picks up the controller to play Elden Ring.

While the patch didn’t include any performance improvements on PC, FromSoftware did acknowledge that players were experiencing unstable framerate. “We have confirmed a bug where the raytracing settings are automatically enabled if you have previously loaded saved data from previous game versions,” FromSoftware said.

The studio then instructed players who were experiencing issues to navigate to the in-game settings and disable raytracing to improve the game’s overall performance. FromSoftware then ended the patch notes by confirming that “other balance adjustments” and bug fixes are being planned for a future patch.

Despite the lack of improvements to the DLC’s performance on PC, Shadow of the Erdtree has managed to climb its way back up to a “mostly positive” Steam rating, with over 56,000 user reviews at the time of writing this article (70% of which are positive).

There are, however, still plenty of negative reviews calling out the game’s poor performance and optimization. One reviewer said the expansion is “truly beautiful” but still left a negative review as it has “worse performance than the base game.”

Another user claimed that they couldn’t run Shadow of the Erdtree on the lowest settings with a 7800XT and a Ryzen 7800x3D without “stuttering and skipping frames.”

“I genuinely cannot say I’m enjoying this. It looks nice, but at the same time can barely hold a stable framerate. I do not understand how [FromSoftware] put out something this poor quality,” another reviewer stated.

Many of the negative reviews that cite poor performance issues appear to be related to an unstable framerate. If you’re one of those people, we recommend following FromSoftware’s advice and disabling raytracing until a new patch is released.
