Capcom Announces Resident Evil 9, Says It Was “Really Difficult” To Figure Out What To Do After 7

During a recent Capcom NEXT livestream, the studio put the recent rumours to bed and confirmed that a new Resident Evil game was now in development. Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi will once again be helming the project, but has said he found it “really difficult” to figure out where to take the series after directing the seventh instalment.
For those confused by Nakanishi’s comments, Resident Evil Village was directed by Morimasa Sato, which meant Nakanishi had no involvement in the development or story of the series’ eighth entry. But the director is now helming what many assume to be Resident Evil 9, which means he was tasked with constructing a new story and ideas for the potential sequel.

Earlier this year, a prominent insider and leaker stated that Resident Evil 9 was aiming for a January 2025 release date, with a reveal coming “pretty soon.” While no trailer or details about the next game were revealed during Capcom’s recent NEXT event, the studio did confirm that a new entry was being developed.
“We’re making a new Resident Evil,” director Koshi Nakanishi announced yesterday. “It was really difficult to figure out what to do after 7. But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial. I can’t share any details just yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”
There’s no word on how far along the development of Resident Evil 9 is, but another rumour surfaced back in May that suggested Capcom was also working on a remake of 1996’s Resident Evil. This rumour has yet to be verified by a credible source, but considering the studio has been on a bit of roll with remakes lately, it wouldn’t be surprising to see.
Capcom NEXT also gave fans a better look at the upcoming remaster of Dead Rising, which is set to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 19. Featuring a graphical overhaul with modern graphics, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster has been fully voiced, supports auto-saves, and has a plethora of other quality-of-life improvements too.
