Borderlands Movie Star Cate Blanchett Says “Covid Madness” Lead To Her Unexpected Role

Highlights

  • Cate Blanchett joins Borderlands movie as Lilith, showcasing her versatility.
  • Blanchett immersed herself in the Borderlands games and fan community for preparation.
  • The Borderlands movie is set to release on August 9, 2024.

From The Lord of the Rings to Oceans 8, Cate Blanchett’s unshakable acting skills truly knows no bounds. The Australian actor has taken on roles that make her one of the world’s greatest chameleons, from a powerful Elf to a world-renowned conductor in Tar and now in the Borderlands movie, Blanchett will yet again slip into a role that some may be surprised she would undertake.

Playing Eli Roth’s long-awaited video game adaptation as the gun-slinging outlaw Lilith, Blanchett says that when she was offered the part she was knee-deep in “covid madness” and needed a role that took her out of herself due to being cooped up and “using the chainsaw a little too freely” in the garden.

Cate Blanchett Became “Really Absorbed” In The Borderlands World

Speaking to Empire, Blanchett answers the question on everyone’s lips about why she would consider entering the Borderlands role and what was it that drew her to the apocalyptic Wastelands. “The crazy asks are usually the things I gravitate towards; the things I could never conceive of,” said Blanchett. Although the appeal of Lilith was certainly a factor for the actor, there was also the fact that the pandemic was driving her a bit mad where she felt cooped up and needed a completely different view of life.

“I think there also may have been a little Covid madness — I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said, ‘This film could save your life.’”

Coming as a surprise to many, as Blanchett would certainly be more well-known for her endless acting talents than her video game skills, and to get a better understanding of the movie, she dove head-on into playing the Borderlands games to get a feel of its world on the PlayStation 5.

“My thumbs can barely control a phone, but I bought a PS5 and we played each other. I wanted to know the limits of the game and what fans loved about the character. I got really absorbed in that whole world.” Blanchett also states that she loved watching Borderlands cosplayers and the community YouTube make-up tutorials.

The Borderlands movie hits cinemas in just over a month on August 9, 2024, and we are keeping everything crossed that it comes across better than it looks in the IGN Live Clip trailer because, oh boy, it’s not looking promising.
