Black Ops 6 Is Reportedly Still Refusing To Ditch Last Gen Consoles

Highlights

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is to be revealed June 9th, but a new leak hints at a last-gen console release.
  • Controversy arises as a leaked GameStop image suggests Black Ops 6 is releasing on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The next entry in one of gaming’s biggest franchises, Call of Duty, is set to be revealed on June 9th, but a leak from a GameStop employee suggests Black Ops 6 is (somehow) still aiming to release on the last generation of consoles.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced a new Xbox Games Showcase for June 9th. It was also confirmed that this special event will be followed by a mysterious ‘redacted’ event for an unknown game. But, with the internet being the way that it is, it didn’t take more than a few minutes for fans to realise that this alluring event was for none other than the next Call of Duty game.

If you’re not great at shooters, prepare to be mocked by XDefiant.

Fans went back and forth for a few days on what the next Call of Duty would be called. Thanks to previous leaks, we knew this highly-anticipated entry was going to be set within Treyarch’s Black Ops subseries, but nobody could quite decide on whether or not this was Black Ops 5, Black Ops 6, or Black Ops: Gulf War.

After much speculation, Activision put the rumours to bed by confirming that this was Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. So, with official confirmation signed by the Call of Duty gods, it was now simply a matter of time until the game’s official reveal next month. But this is Call of Duty, after all, so there has to be some controversy.

Black Ops 6 Fans Aren’t Happy After Last-Gen Release Leak

Yesterday, a post appeared on the Black Ops 6 subreddit with an image which allegedly originates from a GameStop employee. The image appears to include a reference to a PlayStation 4 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, suggesting that the next Call of Duty game is still set to release on last-gen consoles.

The top comment on the post summed up the last-gen release perfectly, simply saying, “This is stupid.” I couldn’t have put it better myself.

While there’s no word on an Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Insider Gaming was able to verify with multiple sources that the image circulating online is legitimate. The report also states that no Xbox One version is listed as the physical Xbox Series X|S version of Black Ops 6 will be the cross-generation version, thus working on the Xbox One.

Insider Gaming also reported back in February that this year’s Call of Duty title would likely be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X|S, further solidifying that Activision is willing to hold the title back for a few extra bucks.
